• Meet our team: Q&A with Cal Spranger

    This month, we’re happy to begin a new series profiling the outstanding people at Badgley Phelps through a series of fun and informative questions and answers. First up is Cal Spranger, Fixed Income Manager and Wealth Manager.

    Q: Briefly describe your job.
    A: I’m responsible for portfolio management, research and trading of fixed income at the firm. My daily activities include evaluating yield curves and sectors, conducting credit analysis for a wide range of municipal credit issuers and determining suitability for the firm’s client portfolios. I provide economic data analysis as well. I’m also a member of the firm’s Investment Policy Team that’s responsible for setting investment strategy and asset allocation.

    Q: What’s your favorite thing about your position and/or about working at Badgley Phelps?
    A: I’m lucky in that my job is diverse. Tasks can range from crunching numbers to contributing to firm marketing to meeting with clients about how best to create and manage their fixed income trading strategy.

    Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?
    A: Mountain bike.

    Q: Where else besides the Seattle area would you like to live?
    A: I’m an outdoor enthusiast so I’d like to live in Boulder or Steamboat Springs, Colorado, or Billings, Montana.

    Q: What’s the last book you read?
    A: How Bad Do You Want It? Mastering the Psychology of Mind Over Muscle

    Q: What’s a little-known fact about you?
    A: My taste in music is eclectic. I like everything from Jimmy Buffet to rap to country.

    Q: Do you have a pet?
    A: I have two dogs: Rocco and Murphy.

    Q: What’s been your best moment so far this year?
    A: Winning the Washington State Mountain Bike Championships for men ages 35-49

    Q: What’s your favorite app?
    A: Trailforks: It’s a mountain bike trail database and management system for riders, builders and trail associations.

    Q: What’s your favorite time of day?
    A: I like 7 p.m. in the summertime. I enjoy sitting on the deck, listening to relaxing music in the warm sun, chatting with my wife and watching the dogs play.
