We’re proud to say that Director of Research and Wealth Manager Tim Thomas has been with Badgley Phelps for 11 years. Check out what this skier and cyclist has to say about his job, the last book he read and what motivates him.
Q: Will you please briefly describe your job?
Today’s world of high government debt levels, aggressive central bank policies and a highly connected global economy creates tremendous risks and opportunities for investors. I am privileged to work with our clients to develop customized strategies that will help them meet their goals while managing the risks inherent in the markets today. As the Director of Research and a Wealth Manager, I do this through my direct contact with clients as well as through the management of strategies that are utilized across the entire firm.
Q: What’s your favorite thing about working at Badgley Phelps?
I enjoy working closely with our clients to help them achieve their objectives while navigating through the inherent volatility in the markets. I also enjoy the freedom provided by our structure and investment philosophy. We operate under the fiduciary standard and are bound to seek the best solutions for our clients rather than focusing on product sales or transactions. That allows me to be completely objective when making recommendations and providing advice.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not at the office?
I enjoy skiing with my family and cycling anytime I am not working.
Q: What’s the last book you read?
“Machine, Platform, Crowd” by McAfee & Brynjolfsson. If you want to understand the landscape for technology companies, this is a great place to start.
Q: What motivates you?
I have a great deal of intellectual curiosity and I like to understand how things work, the significant drivers and the resulting connections. I am also a competitive person and I strive to be the best I can be at anything I do…even something as simple as grilling the perfect steak!
Q: What’s been your best moment so far this year?
Skiing with the family and watching my daughter carve turns on a perfect sunny day with fresh snow.
Q: What’s your favorite cause?
Anything to do with education—I enjoy helping others expand their horizons. I support Montessori Country School; and for the past five years, I have served on the board of the school and am currently the board president.
Q: What’s your favorite time of day?
I am a morning person. For me, that is the most productive time of day…and let’s face it, Seattle is a great place to see the sunrise.
