Remember the iPod, the original portable media player? That device, which launched in 2001, was not only a precursor to the iPad and iPhone, but it’s the reason we have podcasts: The word podcast comes from marrying broadcast and iPod. Podcasts are a great way to listen to great content while commuting to and from work, exercising, cooking or doing the dishes. Whether for entertainment, information or education, there’s a podcast out there for everyone. Here are some of our staff’s favorites.
Mike Schultz, Wealth Manager, Research Analyst and Financial Planner
Mike likes the financial podcast Nightly Business Report which was originally created by NPR but was purchased by CNBC in 2013. “The weekday program airs after the stock market closes and provides coverage on company news of the day, interviews and special reports,” he says.
Mike also listens to The Digital Story, by pro photographer Derrick Story, to stay connected with one of his personal interests. “This weekly podcast (started in 2005!) includes coverage of photography news stories or topics, photo tips, equipment reviews and more. Derrick’s great personality helps make his podcast a regular part of my streaming content.”
Curtis Pepin, Director of Marketing and Wealth Manager
Curtis learns a lot from TED Talks Daily, which brings the latest talks to audio from the world’s leading thinkers and doers.
Stuff You Should Know is a podcast from the Science Channel. Hosted by Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark, SYSK educates the public about common things and how they work.
Curtis finds Skimm This to be a great way to keep up on daily news. The 10-minute daily podcast breaks down the day’s most important stories and why they matter.
Julie Parisio Roy, Director of Financial Planning and Wealth Manager
“Shameless Mom Academy, hosted by local Sara Dean, keeps my mommy brain entertained!” says Julie. Dean’s biggest passion is helping women own their space—she leads a private online community of Shameless Moms and serves as a coach for female business owners.
How I Built This, according to Julie, “provides endless business inspiration.” Hosted by NPR’s Guy Raz, the podcast is exactly what it sounds like: a window into some of the world's best-known companies and the entrepreneurs and visionaries behind them.
Mike Gerke, Wealth Manager and Research Analyst
Mike enjoys Freakonomics, which is the natural next step in the collaboration between New York journalist and author Stephen J. Dubner and award-winning economist Steven D. Levitt. First came two best-selling books, then a blog, a documentary film and a lecture circuit, among other things.
Cal Spranger, Fixed Income Manager and Wealth Manager
Cal likes Make Me Smart with Kai & Molly, which was started with the idea that “none of us is as smart as all of us.” This podcast hosted by Marketplace editors Kai Ryssdal and Molly Wood shares perspectives about the economy, technology and culture. The hosts “connect the dots on the topics they know best and get help from listeners and experts about the ones they want to know better.”
For fun, Cal listens to The Slow Ride Podcast, a humorous take on professional bike racing hosted by three cycling aficionados.
